La série Maria Theodora a été exposée en 1997 au Centre Culturel Français de Jakarta (sur invitation d'Yves Ollivier), en 1999 au domaine de Kerguéhennec, exposition Icônes (curateur Denys Zacharopoulos) et à l'Atelier sur l'Autoroute, Saint-Denis, en 2006 au Musée Zadkine, Paris (curatrice Noëlle Chabert), en 2012 à l'Hôtel Fontfreyde, Clermont-Ferrand, exposition Genius Loci (curatrice Garance Chabert) et au musée d'art contemporain MAC VAL, Vitry-sur-Seine, dans l'exposition Situation(s) [48°47'34'' N / 2°23'14'' E] (curateur Frank Lamy), en 2013 à la Orgelfabrik Karlsruhe-Durlach, dans l'exposition Ja. Part of the Lieu de Mémoire, project by Marie-Ange Guilleminot, Magny-les-Hameaux
With the children of the CM2 class of the elementary school André Gide, the school teacher and director Michelle Tiritan and the visual arts consultant Patrick François.

The Lieu de mémoire proposed by Marie-Ange Guilleminot is dedicated to the victims of 20^th century conflicts. Every year an artist is invited to produce a book in memory of the victims, whether fallen on the battlefield, or deported, or civil victims, of the First and Second World Wars and the War of Algeria. Other artists who have participated or are participating : Marie-Ange Guilleminot, Céline Ahond, Pierre Leguillon, Gilles Balmet…

My proposition is about the notion of living memory (as opposed to dead memory), memory to be renewed. With Michelle Tiritan, and accompanied by Patrick François, we organised several workshop sessions on history and archive documents, the notion of the book, the erasing of writing, working with Chinese ink, using black and white as a metaphor for shadow and light, oblivion and remembrance. During the lessons parellel to the workshop, these themes were continued and completed in different forms. Other particularly memorable moments were the projection of Chaplin's The Dictator, an encounter with the War Veterans, a visit to Paris (including taking part in the flame ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe) and the ceremony of the 8^th of May when the book was solemnly handed over to the town.

The Infinite Book No. 4 is in three volumes :
• The first volume, covered in white felt, has folded zigzag pages showing a rather abstract and « expressionist » passage from black to white where the name of the dead is written by one of the children. The victim's destiny, imposed upon him or her, is marqued with an administrative rubber stamp: « died for France », « died in deportation » and « civil victim ».
• The second volume, which looks the same as the first, plays with paradox: its cover, for which metal plates instead of cardboard have been used, is very heavy, but the content, very thin Japanese paper, very light. On its pages, at intervals, is marked, in the writing of one of the children, the sentence « I remember ». When turning the pages, these sentences appear slowly, as if through mist or fog.
• The third volume is in fact a box, of the same dimensions and with the same cover as the two books. It contains the rubber stamps (and initially also contained the medals offered to the children by the War Veterans).

The very lively blog by Michelle Tiritan, giving more information about the workshop, the meeting with the Veterans, on the 8^th of May 2008, or the visit to Paris, is unfortunately not online anymore. A part of this work's memory is lost…

In 2025, the Infinite Book No. 4 is shown in Marie-Ange Guilleminot's retrospective at Abbaye de Maubuisson.

Dans le cadre du Lieu de mémoire de Marie-Ange Guilleminot, Magny-les-Hameaux
Avec les enfants du CM2 de l'école André Gide, l'institutrice et directrice de l'école Michelle Tiritan et le conseiller pédagogique arts visuels Patrick François.

Dans le cadre du Lieu de mémoire dédié aux victimes des conflits du XX^e siècle, proposé par Marie-Ange Guilleminot, un artiste est invité chaque année à réaliser un livre à la mémoire des victimes morts pour la France, déportés ou morts civiles de Magny-les-Hameaux, de la première et seconde guerre mondiale et la guerre d'Algérie. D'autres artistes qui sont intervenu ou vont intervenir : Marie-Ange Guilleminot, Céline Ahond, Pierre Leguillon, Gilles Balmet ...

Ma proposition portait sur la notion de mémoire vive (au contraire d'une mémoire morte) comme mémoire à renouveler. Avec Michelle Tiritan, et accompagné de Patrick François, nous avons mis sur pieds des ateliers divers avec un travail sur l'histoire et des documents d'archives, sur le livre, l'effacement de l'écriture, et tout un travail en encre de Chine, le noir et blanc comme métaphores d'ombre et de lumière, d'oubli et de souvenir. Dans les cours en parallèle aux ateliers, ce sujet a été repris et approfondi sous diverses formes. D'autres moments forts étaient Le Dictateur de Chaplin, la rencontre avec les Anciens Combattants, une visite de Paris (avec la participation à la cérémonie de ravivage de la flamme de l'Arc de Triomphe) et la cérémonie du 8 mai où le livre a été remis solennellement à la ville.

Le Livre infini n° 4 a pris la forme de 3 tomes :
• Le premier livre, relié en feutre blanc, avec des pages en accordéon montrant un dégradé, abstrait et expressionniste, du noir vers le blanc, où est marque le nom du défunt, écrit par un des enfants. Son destin, qui lui était imposé, a été marqué par un tampon de type administratif : « mort/morte pour la France », « mort en déportation », « victime civile ».
• Le deuxième tome, de même apparence que le premier, joue sur le paradoxe : sa couverture (réalisé en plaques de métal au lieu de carton) est très lourde, mais le contenu, des pages de papier Japon ultra-fin, très lèger. Sur ces pages, à intervalles, est marquée la phrase « Je me souviens » par l'écriture d'un des enfants. En feuilletant, ces phrases apparaissent lentement, comme à travers un brouillard.
• Le troisième tome est une boîte, des mêmes dimensions et à la même reliure que les deux livres, destinés à conserver les tampons (et initialement aussi les médailles que les Anciens Combattants avaient offertes aux enfants).

Le blog très parlant de l'école André Gide mise en ligne par Michelle Tiritan donnait un bel aperçu du déroulement des ateliers, de la rencontre avec les anciens combattants, du 8 mai 2008, de la visite de Paris etc. Malheureusement il n'est plus en ligne. Une partie de la mémoire de ce travail est ainsi perdue…

En 2025, le Livre infini N° 4 est présenté dans la rétrospective de Marie-Ange Guilleminot à l'Abbaye de Maubuisson.

Since 2012, I have been working on a research project about my grand-parents, Hermann (called Sven) Gautel and Corona Krause, and the German Bauhaus history, with support of the Aide à la recherche artistique, CNAP, France (2013-2014), of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation (artist in residence in 2017), and with the Bauhaus-Archiv Berlin, the Bauhaus Museum Weimar, Burg Giebichenstein Halle and the Landesmuseum Oldenburg. And of course with the precious help and support of the Gautel and Beyer families!

Depuis 2012, je travaille sur un projet de recherches sur mes grands-parents, Hermann (dit Sven) Gautel et Corona Krause, et l'histoire du Bauhaus en Allemagne, avec le soutien de l'Aide à la recherche artistique, CNAP, France (2013-2014), de la Fondation Bauhaus Dessau (résidence d'artiste en 2017), et avec le Bauhaus-Archiv Berlin, le Bauhaus Museum Weimar, la Burg Giebichenstein Halle et le Landesmuseum Oldenburg. Et bien sûr avec l'aide et le soutien précieux des familles Gautel et Beyer !
