Part of the Lieu de Mémoire, project by Marie-Ange Guilleminot, Magny-les-Hameaux

With the children of the CM2 class of the elementary school André Gide, the school teacher and director Michelle Tiritan and the visual arts consultant Patrick François.

The Lieu de mémoire proposed by Marie-Ange Guilleminot is dedicated to the victims of 20^th century conflicts. Every year an artist is invited to produce a book in memory of the victims, whether fallen on the battlefield, or deported, or civil victims, of the First and Second World Wars and the War of Algeria. Other artists who have participated or are participating : Marie-Ange Guilleminot, Céline Ahond, Pierre Leguillon, Gilles Balmet…

My proposition is about the notion of living memory (as opposed to dead memory), memory to be renewed. With Michelle Tiritan, and accompanied by Patrick François, we organised several workshop sessions on history and archive documents, the notion of the book, the erasing of writing, working with Chinese ink, using black and white as a metaphor for shadow and light, oblivion and remembrance. During the lessons parellel to the workshop, these themes were continued and completed in different forms. Other particularly memorable moments were the projection of Chaplin's The Dictator, an encounter with the War Veterans, a visit to Paris (including taking part in the flame ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe) and the ceremony of the 8^th of May when the book was solemnly handed over to the town.

The Infinite Book No. 4 is in three volumes :
• The first volume, covered in white felt, has folded zigzag pages showing a rather abstract and « expressionist » passage from black to white where the name of the dead is written by one of the children. The victim's destiny, imposed upon him or her, is marqued with an administrative rubber stamp: « died for France », « died in deportation » and « civil victim ».
• The second volume, which looks the same as the first, plays with paradox: its cover, for which metal plates instead of cardboard have been used, is very heavy, but the content, very thin Japanese paper, very light. On its pages, at intervals, is marked, in the writing of one of the children, the sentence « I remember ». When turning the pages, these sentences appear slowly, as if through mist or fog.
• The third volume is in fact a box, of the same dimensions and with the same cover as the two books. It contains the rubber stamps (and initially also contained the medals offered to the children by the War Veterans).

The very lively blog by Michelle Tiritan, giving more information about the workshop, the meeting with the Veterans, on the 8^th of May 2008, or the visit to Paris, is unfortunately not online anymore. A part of this work's memory is lost…

In 2025, the Infinite Book No. 4 is shown in Marie-Ange Guilleminot's retrospective at Abbaye de Maubuisson.

Avec les enfants du CM2 de l'école André Gide, l'institutrice et directrice de l'école Michelle Tiritan et le conseiller pédagogique arts visuels Patrick François.

Dans le cadre du Lieu de mémoire dédié aux victimes des conflits du XX^e siècle, proposé par Marie-Ange Guilleminot, un artiste est invité chaque année à réaliser un livre à la mémoire des victimes morts pour la France, déportés ou morts civiles de Magny-les-Hameaux, de la première et seconde guerre mondiale et la guerre d'Algérie. D'autres artistes qui sont intervenu ou vont intervenir : Marie-Ange Guilleminot, Céline Ahond, Pierre Leguillon, Gilles Balmet ...

Ma proposition portait sur la notion de mémoire vive (au contraire d'une mémoire morte) comme mémoire à renouveler. Avec Michelle Tiritan, et accompagné de Patrick François, nous avons mis sur pieds des ateliers divers avec un travail sur l'histoire et des documents d'archives, sur le livre, l'effacement de l'écriture, et tout un travail en encre de Chine, le noir et blanc comme métaphores d'ombre et de lumière, d'oubli et de souvenir. Dans les cours en parallèle aux ateliers, ce sujet a été repris et approfondi sous diverses formes. D'autres moments forts étaient Le Dictateur de Chaplin, la rencontre avec les Anciens Combattants, une visite de Paris (avec la participation à la cérémonie de ravivage de la flamme de l'Arc de Triomphe) et la cérémonie du 8 mai où le livre a été remis solennellement à la ville.

Le Livre infini n° 4 a pris la forme de 3 tomes :
• Le premier livre, relié en feutre blanc, avec des pages en accordéon montrant un dégradé, abstrait et expressionniste, du noir vers le blanc, où est marque le nom du défunt, écrit par un des enfants. Son destin, qui lui était imposé, a été marqué par un tampon de type administratif : « mort/morte pour la France », « mort en déportation », « victime civile ».
• Le deuxième tome, de même apparence que le premier, joue sur le paradoxe : sa couverture (réalisé en plaques de métal au lieu de carton) est très lourde, mais le contenu, des pages de papier Japon ultra-fin, très lèger. Sur ces pages, à intervalles, est marquée la phrase « Je me souviens » par l'écriture d'un des enfants. En feuilletant, ces phrases apparaissent lentement, comme à travers un brouillard.
• Le troisième tome est une boîte, des mêmes dimensions et à la même reliure que les deux livres, destinés à conserver les tampons (et initialement aussi les médailles que les Anciens Combattants avaient offertes aux enfants).

Pour plus d'informations sur le déroulement des ateliers, la rencontre avec les anciens combattants, le 8 mai 2008, la visite de Paris etc., le blog très parlant de l'école André Gide mise en ligne par Michelle Tiritan donnait un beau compte rendu. Malheureusement il n'est plus en ligne. Une partie de la mémoire de ce travail est ainsi perdue…

En 2025, le Livre infini N° 4 est présenté dans la rétrospective de Marie-Ange Guilleminot à l'Abbaye de Maubuisson.

In Spring 2022, double exhibition at the new court house of Poitiers, Palais de Justice, and at the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme et de la Société, Poitiers University.
With the complicity of the curator Dominique Truco and with the decisive support of the Palais de Justice de Poitiers, the MSHS de Poitiers and the Association Française pour l'Histoire de la Justice, Atelier Petit par Camille Maupin and Studio Ludo.

The first part of this chapter of Justice(s) has been shown at the hall of the new Poitiers court house from January 12 till July 11, 2022, the second part at the MSHS, Poitiers University, from March 1^st till April 29, 2022. Opening on both sites on March 14, 2022.
In 2022, acquisition of a suite of 15 portraits by the Palais de Justice de Poitiers.

An overview of the series is shown in Summer 2023 at the exhibition Artist Banners, Saint-Micaud, Burgundy, on the initiative of Anne Lanci, and in the 2024 edition in Saint-Gengoux-le-National, organised by Anne and Max Lanci.

Le premier volet de ce chapitre de Justice(s) a été exposé dans la salle des pas perdus du nouveau palais de justice de Poitiers du 12 janvier au 11 juillet 2022, le deuxième volet à la MSHS de l'université de Poitiers du 1^er mars au 29 avril. Vernissage commun le 14 mars 2022.
En 2022, acquisition d'un ensemble de 15 portraits par le palais de justice de Poitiers.

Un aperçu de la série est montré en été 2023 dans l'exposition Bannières d'artistes, Saint-Micaud, Bourgogne, sur initiative d'Anne Lanci, et dans l'édition de 2024 à Saint-Gengoux-le-National, organisée par Anne et Max Lanci.

Che Guevara (d'après la photo d'Alberto Korda, 1929 - 2001) en jours d'Angles, environ 70 X 90 cm, réalisé (en plus de 300 heures) par Maïté Chevreau de l'Association pour la Sauvegarde et le Rayonnement des Jours d'Angles, Angles sur l'Anglin.

Dans le cadre du programme Métissages / médium textile lancé par la Délégation aux Arts Plastiques (CNAP), curateur Yves Sabourin.

Comme écrit Yves Sabourin, en jouant de « la radicalité de la technique de l'ajourage, Jakob Gautel a proposé à Maïté Chevreau de sacraliser et désacraliser "le Che", icône appartenant aujourd'hui au mythe du libérateur romantique. Sacralisation car le Che appartient à cette équipée des Jésus et Bouddha. Mais la désacralisation est présente aussi dans le travail de déstructuration de la matière/tissu (supprimer des fils de chaîne et de trame afin de faire apparaître le vide). De plus cette effigie qui s'apparente à un suaire s'installe comme un petit rideau "bonne femme" devant une fenêtre.
La technique de l'ajoureuse est exemplaire. Elle propose aussi des inventions techniques comme le point "demi-pavé", évolution de la technique. »

Che Guevara (after the photo by Alberto Korda, 1929-2001), approximatively 70 x 90 cm, made (in over 300 hours) using the old embroidery ajourage technique called “Jours d'Angles”, by Maïté Chevreau of the Association pour la Sauvegarde et le Rayonnement des Jours d'Angles, (an Association for the maintenance and promotion of the Jours d'Angles technique), at Angles sur l'Anglin.

As Yves Sabourin put it, in playing with “ the radicality of the textile ajourage technique, Jakob Gautel asked Maité Chevreau to sacralize and desacralize “Che”, the present time icon of the romantic liberator's myth. Sacralization, since Che plays for the same team as Jesus and Buddha. But also desacralization, the ajourage technique consisting of destructuring the material (a void is created by taking away warp and weft threads). Furthermore, this effigy reminds one of a shroud, and is put up in front of a window, like an old lady's lace curtain.
The embroider's technique is outstanding. She proposed technical inventions such as the “demi-pavé” point, a real technical evolution.”

About Fragility

My proposition for the project Les arts de la terre et du feu played on the notion of paradox. The fragility of the material itself became symbolic.

Images from actual news, but rather abstract and evocative, showing the destruction of the World Trade Center in New York, on 9/11/2001. A diptychon, icon of the destructive instinct of mankind.

These images revived a refined technique of the 19^th century, the “lithophane”:
A fine porcelain plate in relief. When one holds it against the light, it reveals an image in different shades of grey, created by the different thicknesses of the material, more or less transparent. This technique allows a magical, almost photographic rendering to images.

Last photos : presentation of the work at the ERDF enterprise, Mérignac, in the exhibition Lumière, as part of the programme L'entreprise à l'œuvre initiated by the ministère de la Culture et de la Communication, with art works from the CNAP collection, 2014.

Place du Préfet Claude Erignac

My project for the Place du Préfet Claude Erignac, developed in close contact with the family Erignac, is based on several notions:
→ encounter, dialogue and exchange;
→ the transmission of humanist ideas and ideals cherished by Claude Erignac;
→ the creation of a warm and welcoming atmosphere in the square, by avoiding the overly symmetric and solumn character of the former configuration.

The concept is made up of two complementary parts:

• Twelve public benches, installed in a curve, like a wave, a flock of birds, an assembly. An asymmetric curved dispositive, with as a final point an intimate corner with two benches around a table.
The benches are the typical Parisian two-faced benches with a wooden seat and an iron structure. Each bench has three brass plates fixed on its back, with phrases from Claude Erignac's personal notebook. They are short, virtuous sentences about subjets such as the freedom of expression, tolerance, the importance of education and of the transmission of knowledge, responsibility, civic sense, prospecting into the future, but also more emotional or funny aphorisms and proverbs. The quotations are from Woody Allen, Guillaume Apollinaire, Gaston Berger, Albert Camus, Nicolas Chamfort, René Char, Georges Clemenceau, Francis Scott Fitzgerald, Jean Giraudoux, Johann Wolfgang Goethe, Guillaume d'Orange, Victor Hugo, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther, André Malraux, Herbert Marcuse, Marivaux, Pierre Mendès France, Mathieu Molé, Pascal, Pablo Picasso, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Sénèque, Percey Shelley, Paul Valéry, Voltaire, Oscar Wilde, Emile Zola, a quotation of the jewish memorial in Nancy, a Dogon proverb, and a quotation by Claude Erignac himself.
The authors of these sentences are mentioned on a plaque at a central point, fixed on one of the planter's edges, so that one can then find “their” bench with the help of numbers.

• At nighttime, this device is completed by the projection of one page of Erignac's quotation notebook, on the facade of the neighbouring building that frames the entrance of the square with two high walls (without an opening). One of these walls becomes a screen, a surface for ideas, a page to write. This projection is a continuation of the sentences on the benches and animates them, transforming them into light, the essence of an idea.
