Die Kronenklauer - The Crown Thieves
by F.K. Waechter and Bernd Eilert, Diogenes, first published in 1972, several reeditions

I thought of this book from my childhood, deeply anarchic and with a strong idea of community, power sharing and democracy, which is very relevant today.
Die Kronenklauer is a wonderful children’s book by F.K. Waechter and Bernd Eilert, recounting with great imagination the adventures of three youngsters in an imaginary land under the despotic rule of the pig king, König Schwarte. Very unhappy with this king’s government, the children decide to steal his crown and give it to an old trusted friend, the wise owl Dr Johannes Loy. After a while, they realise that they don’t approve some of the new king’s decisions either. So they steal the crown a second time, melt it down and make lots of little crowns, one for each of them!
